The Carrie Bradshaw Effect: The Challenge

Heeey Girl!  I promised an announcement today, so here it goes: I have blackmail photos of Ryan Gossling making out with a tranny in the Castro.  JUST KIDDING JUST KIDDING JUST KIDDING!  No, but for realsies, after last week's real talk regarding "The Carrie Bradshaw Effect" I got an amazing outpouring of great feedback and support.  One person who was a huge champion for this was my dear friend Amy from Amy's Vintage Closet.  Not only was she verbally encouraging but agreed to do the challenge with me as an accountability partner.  We got to thinking and based on all the responses that I got, figured I would open this up to the rest of the universe.  Because if I learned anything from life it's that doing things with friends is way better than doing them by yourself.  DUH!

So, here are the guidelines for this challenge.  I am not calling them rules because "rules are meant to be broken", and I want us to all be successful at this:

- No money can be spent on new clothes until January 1, 2013.  That at least is for me... be flexible and realistic with yourself depending on your needs/lifestyle.  If you want to go for shorter fine.  If you want to go for longer, have at it.

- Make realistic parameters for yourself.  For instance I have loopholes of utilizing Poshmark credits, swapping, and borrowing clothes...Just absolutely no actual currency used to purchase new clothes.

- October 20th is swap day.  Participants in the challenge can either host or attend a swap in their area.  I will organize one in SF/Bay Area.  Amy will host one in Phoenix.  Just invite your friends and have them show up with their clothes to a central location.  Any leftover clothes should be donated to a local charity. (In SF we will be donating to The Princess Project) If there is something that a swap participant is in dire need of, they should email the group prior to the swap and ask if anyone has anything that matches the criteria that can either be loaned to the requester or swapped.

-Help a sista out:  If a participant really needs an item, but doesn't want to spend the money, she can hashtag the group at: #thebradshaweffect on twitter requesting the item (cc me @THYMWYA or Amy @ablackie just in case) and we will put you in touch with the right person to get you what you need.

- Wednesday's are for rethinking your wardrobe.  We will call it: "What You're Working With". The idea is since we are on spending freezes right when the seasons are changing, how can we transition a piece three ways (Summer, Fall, Winter) by utilizing the items that we already own.  For instance:  That maxi dress we all got on sale in August...Show a medium layering for Fall and then a heavy multiple layer for Winter.  Since this isn't just for bloggers, participants can post their rethought, remixed outifit on Instagram and hashtag it at #thebradshaweffect.

What do you think Brit?

Yeah, me too!  So, let us know if you want to join up.  We can do it!

  3. My closet is in too much need to winter clothes to participate in the overall challenge, but I am more than happy to support the cause and join you for the clothing swap/princess project aspect! I'll also be sure to help spread the word, as this is a message ALL fashionistas either need to hear or have heard but need to implement. No matter how good those new clothes make you look, being broke for dumb reasons is NEVER cute!
